Language Requirements

Knowledge of the English language is a basic condition for admission to the doctoral studies at GSSR. As part of their application package (see Documents checklist), candidates should provide the results of a standardized English language proficiency test (see table below for acceptable tests and scoring).

Alternatively, candidates can take a language proficiency test within GSSR if their application was positively evaluated at Stage One (cf. Admissions Process). GSSR-conducted English language examinations will take place online in the period August 23-27 and before candidates’ Individual Interviews that form Stage Two of the Admission process.


During the interview each candidate has to display a level of knowledge of the English language allowing them to conduct research and take part in classes held in that language.


Candidates who have completed their studies in English (Bachelor’s or Master’s degree) are exempt from providing results of a standardized tests and taking the GSSR English language examination.


GSSR-administered English language proficiency testing will take place online, in the period August 23-27. Qualifying candidates will be informed of their scheduled testing time via email, by August 30.


Candidates who fail to attend the scheduled GSSR-administered testing without prior notification and documented justification will be considered to have withdrawn their application.
