PhD Programme in Philosophy and Sociology
The New Doctoral School
In 2019 under the provisions of the new law on higher education and science, the GSSR became the home of a new doctoral school in which the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology is joined by partner Institutes in the Polish Academy of Sciences: the Institute of Psychology and the Institute of Political Studies. Doctoral students recruited by the three Institutes since the academic year 2019-20 are members of a single interdisciplinary doctoral school. They will still defend their theses to be awarded doctorates in one of the four disciplines, but will enjoy the benefits of working in a broader interdisciplinary environment.
Doctoral students are required to take 4 compulsory courses appropriate to their chosen discipline . A wide range of optional courses in political studies, philosophy, psychology and sociology is also available to all doctoral students regardless of the discipline in which their thesis will be defended (see courses)
Coursework forms only apart of each student’s individual study programme. Usually students will complete all compulsory courses by the end of the second year of study. In addition all doctoral students are expected to participate in a current research group led by a member of the academic staff preferably within one of the three Institutes participating in the doctoral school, to participate in conferences and to to publish work in leading academic journals.
