International Workshop „Violence and its sublimation within the fantasy-reality continuum”

International Workshop for PhD students and Postdoctoral Researchers „Violence and its sublimation within the fantasy-reality continuum: Between psychoanalysis and the theory of civilizing processes”.

When: December 6-8, 2022.

Where: Room 268, Staszic Palace, Nowy Swiat 72, 00-330, Warsaw, Poland.

PhD students and postdoctoral researchers working on topics related to the question of violence and the fantasy-reality continuum will explore interconnections between psychoanalysis and Norbert Elias’s theory of civilizing and decivilizing processes. Together with instructors including Professors Robert van Krieken (University of Sydney, Australia), Krzysztof Świrek (Faculty of Sociology, UW, Poland), Marta Bucholc (Faculty of Sociology, UW; Centre de recherche en science politique, Université Saint-Louis Bruxelles), Andrzej Leder and Adam Lipszyc, both from the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology, Polish Academy of Sciences (IFiS PAN), they will look at case studies of sublimating violence – culturally, politically and socially. These case studies are proposed by the participants.

The workshop is the prelude to the conference „The Fantasy-Reality Continuum, Science, Religion, Politics, Culture” (December 8-10, University of Warsaw, UW, Poland). Its organizers are the Norbert Elias Foundation together with the UW Faculty of Sociology, GSSR, and the Center for Psychoanalytic Thought at IFiS PAN.
