GSSR

During your stay

A valid travel document (passport) or other valid ID document allows EU/EFTA nationals to stay in Poland for up to 3 months. EU/EFTA nationals staying in Poland for more than 3 months have to register their residence.

You will have to register your residence in Poland at the Mazowiecki Urząd Wojewódzki no later than the next day after the end of the 90-day entry period.

Apart from the application form and a copy of your travel document/ID, you will have to submit a statement confirming the date of the last border crossing, 4 photographs (taken no earlier than 6 months before the application), confirmation of health insurance, declaration of having sufficient funds to support yourself, and a confirmation of your studies issued by GSSR.

We recommend visiting the University of Warsaw’s Welcome Point website that provides extensive advice for EU/EFTA nationals seeking to register their residence in Poland.

Please note that the documents will have to be filled in Polish. Any document issued in a foreign language will have to be accompanied by an official translation into Polish, made by a sworn translator. The list of sworn translators who work in Warsaw can be found here.

Non-EU citizens can enter and stay in Poland based on two types of visa: a Schengen visa (C-type Visa) or a national visa (D-type Visa).

Foreign nationals entering Poland on a visa and planning to stay for longer than 3 months have to apply for a temporary residence permit. When applying for a residence permit in Warsaw, you will have to register your case and submit your application through the inPOL portal.

Apart from 2 application forms for a temporary residence permit and 2 copies of your travel document (passport), you will have to submit 4 photographs (taken no earlier than 6 months before the application), confirmation of health insurance, declaration of having sufficient funds to support yourself and travel back to your country, confirmation of your studies issued by GSSR, transcript of records, and information about utilities expenses (water, gas, electricity, etc.).

We recommend visiting the University of Warsaw’s Welcome Point website that provides extensive advice for Non-EU/EFTA nationals seeking to apply for a temporary residence permit in Poland.

Please note that the documents will have to be filled in Polish. Any document issued in a foreign language will have to be accompanied by an official translation into Polish, made by a sworn translator. The list of sworn translators who work in Warsaw can be found here.

As a GSSR student, you will be issued a doctoral student card. The card is only valid if it has a special sticker on its back. You need to collect a new sticker from the GSSR office before the beginning of each academic year.

A doctoral student card entitles holders under the age of 35 to a discount for public transport, e.g. a 50% discount for Warsaw public transport and a 51% discount for PKP (Polish State Railways) trains.

Each GSSR student is issued a personal email address in the gssr.edu.pl domain.

All foreign nationals have to register their address in Poland. Non-EU citizens have to register their address for stays longer than 30 days and need a rental agreement, passport, and visa to do so. EU citizens have to register their address if they stay in Poland for longer than 3 months and need a rental agreement and national ID. Registering your address requires you to visit the district office that corresponds to your address of residence. See the University of Warsaw’s Welcome Point website for more information and a complete list of district offices in Warsaw.

PESEL (Universal Electronic System for Registration of the Population) is a national identification number. All foreign nationals who register their address in Poland for a stay of over 30 days are automatically issued a PESEL. If you cannot register your address but still need the PESEL, you will have to fill in an application (free of charge) to the Śródmieście district office.

We recommend visiting the website of the University of Warsaw’s Welcome Point to read more about your PESEL number.
